We are having lovely 24, 25 degree days with days of 28 29 intermingled.

Last night was a hot one and at 1.30 am it was still 17 degrees!

Anyhow this warm weather is certainly bringing out the tourists

with people from Adelaide SA, Sunshine Coast QLD and Perth WA

visiting Recycled Relix.

Here are some of the new items in store now!

I may have to take this home..... just love the look.

It is a Hutschenreuther Cup Saucer and Plate from Bavaria

c1940s 1950s

The Gold CS&P is also a Hutschenreuther, the rear left is

marked Bavaria and the rear right is Felda Rhon.

Both these makers made china for the Third Reicht.

On the left is the Kodak Brownie Six-20 c1947 and still in

working order.

On the right is the Kodal 1A Autographic JR c1913 again in working order

and with lovely detail....

And for the purist - it also has its PEN held in the brackets

of the Autograph compartment.

When you took the photo you would write on the film with the pen.

The pen itself is worth $50 as they were often lost and

this is the first one I have seen complete!

Hot & Humid in Tassie.....?? For a day or two anyway!

We moved 5 years ago this month to Tasmania

for a reprieve from the Queensland heat and humidity.

The first week we were here it was 30 degrees

and I was so upset and wondered what had we done!

Anyhow I have learnt now that even if we do have A hot day

it is just that 1 day, maybe 2 then Tassie does

what it does best and turns on the 23/24 degree

blue sky days....

Today with an expected 29 degrees - I can not wait for tomorrow!

I hope you have all had a nice break with your families.

We enjoyed the New Year Fireworks in Launceston

they were quite spectacular and very loud!

For those of you with interstate families (like us)

we also had to see the QLD New Year in

which meant staying awake till 1am and then talking to

my brother till 1.30am!

Somehow he thinks Tassie is backward yet

Tasmania saw the New Year in FIRST.....

So I don't see his logic!

Anyhow back to business....

I have some unusual and interesting items to show you.....

This is a 19th Century Leather covered Travelling Inkwell

Nicely decorated and in pretty good condition

given its age.....

One WW2 German Army Pin,

an Italian Fascist Pin from the Mussolini era,

and a Russian Supreme Commando Regiment Pin.

(Thanks Neil Harris for correcting me !)

A lovely Brass Railway Lamp c1904

with a Red Glass Lense and rear clear glass lenses either side.

It would have been used to indicate the end of the train or carriage.

A Jews Harp.....

if you want to learn how to play this (you put it in your mouth)

have a look on You Tube.....

This is one of my favourite pieces at the moment....

It is a knife..... late 1800's early 1900's....

This is how you would have it in your pocket.

Then you slide the middle bit out....

open up the knife

Then slide it back in and it clicks in place....

ready to use..... how good is this???

c1930's with a butterscotch bakelite handle

in its original case and box!

Lovely Sovereign and coin holder with a

9ct Gold Fob Medallion with 2 rifles.

This is a Swiss Made lighter by Thorens

very special .... when it is closed

you push the button to open and it lights

as it opens.... lovely workmanship.

The picture doesn't do this Victorian Vesta

justice..... it is a lovely piece.....

has a nice feel to it.

The matches go in under the elephants chin and

to light the match you strike it down its back.

Could be worn on a chain......

I do have some other new pieces but unfortunately

my camera and I don't get a long sometimes.....

I have a Royal Navy Badge and an Australian Airforce Pin as well.

The Rare and the Unusual.....

We have lots of fun researching the items that come in....

Some are weird, some are wacky and we have lots

that are just plain ugly but unusual.

It is amazing what you can learn about a piece when you

search Google!

Anyhow here are a few items suitable for

the hard to buy for, or the person who has everything!

Old Cast Iron Press .... can be

used for flowers or books or

could be an unusual doorstop!

Now this 1945s game is Australian, made by M & L Plastics

of Melbourne - called Race Play.

It is rare and can be found in the Queen Victoria Museum

in Melbourne.

The idea is to pull all the horses out and then turn the

handle to bring them back in - first in wins.....

There is Phar Lap, Windbag, Carbine, Bernborough,

Peter Pan, Shannon and Flight.

It is made of Bakelite and as you can see there is

1 Blue horse, 2 Red, 2 Black, 2 Green and a Brown.

Four of them have docked tails due to the passage of time

and the original box is a little worse for wear

but the set is in working order and great for the avid collector.

This is an old unusual Builders Chalk line -

carved with Frog, Lizard and Bull.....

I can be quite creative when I put my mind to it....

so when I spotted some Deer antlers I bought the lot

with decorating the shop in mind.... and after some

tizzying with calico

Wow, how time flys when you are having fun!

In this economic climate we are lucky to have survived

is hand crafted in steel and leather.

Tassie has turned it on today......

there is nothing like clear blue skies

with the odd cotton wool ball cloud!

This Retro Bobble Head Money Box is a rarity.....

usually they are damaged or incomplete but this one is

perfect and very cute!

This is a local Launceston lad who went to WW11.

His name is John Dargan and he was a Corporal

and saw action in El Alamein and Tobruk.

One of his relatives (I think his mum) has gone to the trouble

of sticking an article from a newspaper at the time.

She has also recorded his service number

and his Battalion and Division details.

This is a Hobart lad - Arthur Bowen - we think.

The photo has been hand tinted and is signed by

an Art Studio in Hobart and dated 1907.

He was in the 40th Battalion (Infantry) during World War 1

Rather cute retro Coffee or side table.

This pottery and timber lamp is from the 60's/70's

and was made by an Australian pottery company Rathjen.

Things are hectic here in Launceston, we have just had an interstate

visitor and are just about to get another one.....

Things get postponed when it doesn't relate to

housework and Soccer at the moment.

The Soccer season ends today (YAHOO!!) and so

we are in the final stages of preparation for trophy day.

Nearly 400 trophy's to be set out into their teams

in readiness for all the players tomorrow.

Anyhow..... down to business.....

This is a lovely 1930's McHugh Dog Doorstop.

He is rather rare and a handsome chappy

and in great condition for his age.

This Walnut Pedestal Tilt Top Table is stunning

and would be a lovely formal dining table.

But the jury is still out!!

Wendy may be Wayne..... and if you watched the Migration
documentary last night on Channel 7 you may be just as confused as me because the Males looked like the Females and visa versa.

So I did some more research and I still don't know, but what I have learnt is that She, He or It is a Blue Wildebeest. It is a good specimen of the species because the horns are more than 60 centimeters wide and go out further than the tips of the ears.....??

The other thing I have learnt was that it probably is a girl because the base of the horns isn't overly wide or deep - the male tends to have rather wide bases to the horns.....

Oh well..... it is a problem when you don't have access to all bits of the creature.....

If you have any idea about Wendy or Wayne, I would love to hear it!

Well here's the latest addition to our shop.....

She is a very large and heavy Wildebeest.

Very much a statement for your home, bar room or Big Boys shed.....

She seems to follow me when I walk through.....

She is quite deep and will be nicely positioned above a mantlepiece....

They are an interesting looking beast with a flat nose and flat spots just below their eyes.

Amazing! So you have to pay someone from Sydney to assess the clock? Just because you have some complaints from a few Quest guests? I live in town and yes I have already voiced my opinion on this matter but I am also a business owner who relies on the tourist dollar to earn a living. The tourists who visit my shop always complain loudly about parking, the lack thereof of free parking and the cost to shop when you park in the city. So if you are going to consider silencing the clock how about stopping the parking fees that stop the many tourists visiting my shop and the CBD! Don't stop the clock for a few Hotel guests - stop the parking fees for the many hundreds of thousands of tourists who visit our City!

So this is a just a little spooky.....

A couple of weeks ago a guy came into the shop, who had never been in before.

It happens quite regularly where people who live in Launceston pop into the shop for the first time.....

even though we have been open since November 2009!

He had a good look around and then bought some Britains Ltd Lead Soldiers with machine guns.

He collects Lead Soldiers.

Nothing unusual about that - I know.

Then as he was paying for the Soldiers he happened to glance down into the jewelry cabinet.

This is where it gets spooky.

He just happens to be Scottish - I just happened to have a Sterling Silver Plaid Brooch in my cabinet.

It just happens to have the same "coat of arms"

as his home town in Scotland called Moffat.

(Moffat is a tiny historical town of 2500 in Southern Scotland

famous for being home to the World's Narrowest Hotel).

He didn't want me to get it out of the cabinet, I told him the latin words

"Nunquam non paratus" meant "Never Unprepared".

He knows Moffat's town motto as "Ready, I Ready"

He stood there gazing at it, slowly shaking his head.

He couldn't not touch it (in my opinion) so I ignored his objections and took it out to show him

It is a lovely piece - solid Sterling Silver c1909

He bought it.

He told me when he bought it that it had the same details as

his sash cloth badge and that he would bring it in and show me.

Today he did just that and the other spooky thing we discovered

on viewing them side by side was that it also has

the exact same motto.

Isn't it just the most amazing rehoming story???

Vintage Iron House Names.....

I think these Iron House Names are somewhat of a dying art - they would have taken a lot of time and effort to make.

Jenville - very heavy - just need to paint whatever color you desire and attach!

Just over 1 metre long.

Trade Winds - not so heavy - paint to suit your house or fence and fix with screws.
Approximately 170 cms long

They are in great condition.

Amazing isn't it - that it's July already! Winter in Launceston is very changeable. We started with a warmish morning and have had periodic showers for the rest of the day. Customers have come in when it wasn't raining and then not been able to leave because it was pouring!

Here is one of our new Chalkware or Plaster pieces - it is a classic deco style.

This is an Italian plaster piece - c1940's signed A Santini of Depositato.

This is a Mattei Bros & Co piece - again c1940's

This Plaster Pekinese Dog has been handed down through three generations.

He is very cute!

These are Siam Sterling Silver screw on earrings - really nice - could take these home!

Clear Blue Skies and Ice Cold Frost!

Here in Tasmania, Australia's southernmost state,

we are experiencing beautiful winter days.

They are beautiful when you stay in bed or leave the house after 10am.

Today we left home just before 9am and the car said it was 2 degrees

and we were going to Soccer to stand out in it!

So we were rugged up in coat, scarf and gloves and luckily

it wasn't windy and the sun was doing its toasty best!

It was all worth it though because Mackenzie's team won the game

and it was so early I got to go see it before opening the shop.

We seem to have had lots of people in this week trying to sell us

bits and pieces.

Its not spring yet!

Anyhow heres some of the more interesting items....

I quite like this piece.... would look great in a bathroom or bedroom....

They are a Personal Weighing Machine by Jaraso.

Circa mid 1800's. Cast Iron and very heavy.

You stand on the top and if you look closely the face is a mirror image.

The mirror folds out so you can read the dial!! It tells you how much

you weigh in stones and pounds.

How clever is that?

See the reflection.

This old Church Collection box has two sections - one for

the small coins and one for the large.

Inside is inscribed August 1864.....

Two Antique Riding Crops with horn handles.

Lovely Oleographs of King George V and Queen Mary.

This is one of my favourite bits.... still tossing up whether I should

take them home!

It is a lovely tin boxed set of Bakelite Domino's!

Full Set.....with Wills"s Star Cigarettes on the back.

Ok now I love Jacobean..... and this isn't Jacobean

but if you stand with your eye's slightly shut it could be!

It is a Victorian English Oak Dumb Waiter. (Must be the English Oak that takes my fancy)

And I also think Dumb Waiter isn't a very nice name but

looking it up in my Concise Dictionary of Antique Collecting it means

"movable table, often with revolving shelves, used to serve food"

So here it is! and it is one of the things I would like to take home!!

May has brought with it cool nights and lovely winter days.

This morning it was foggy in town and I wondered if I would

ever see the sky but by lunchtime we had beautiful blue clear sky!

Tonight we are off to see the Van Diemen Rollers.....

Ever heard of them?

They are a group of women who compete in Roller Derby!

So we are off to Westbury to see them race.

Should be a great night - when you get your tickets they tell you

to rug up, bring a blanket and make sure you get there early

otherwise you may have to sit in suicide corner!

Anyhow back to business....

This lovely Rocking Horse is from the 40's/50's and has been well loved.

His structure is timber, covered in hide and is straw filled.

I found this Library Ladder the other day and it caught

my eye because it was so rustic but had a nice feel to it.

I will use it for display - it really isn't strong enough to

use as a ladder.

This Tin Hat Box is gorgeous. It is rather large - although

it doesn't really show that in this photo.

This photo is of our front room, but I really wanted to show you

the new table which is a stunner!

It has a Kauri Pine top and a Tasmanian Blackwood base.

The legs are a great shape and it has 3 drawers.

This week we went for Orange.

It's such a fresh color for the cooler months.

Its a happy color.

After a very full on 7 days away the boys returned Saturday night.

Exhausted.

The funny thing was that the West Coast Eagles were at Launceston Airport

waiting to board their plane to Perth, WA.

Mackenzie & Michael's plane was delayed....

which meant that when they landed the WCE

were already downstairs waiting to board.

Luckily I managed to get Nic Naitanui's signature on his picture

on the back of the Examiner plus Dean Cox and heaps

of other players that I recognised

but couldn't put a name to......

Not a very good Eagles supporter am I??

Anyhow Mackenzie waived to Nic through the glass

and Nic waived back..... how nice.

Joe, Michael and Mackenzie..... and the Nike Mercurial Safari boot.....

Not available in Australia..... imported from the UK.....

And a boy on another team was wearing a pair..... :)

Isn't he gorgeous.... handsome......

I am glad to have them home.....

Although the peace and quiet was nice....

As was the kitchen that remained clean and tidy......

and brought me a gift from her sister Judy from my quilt creations

Just had to put it on!!

Mind you I am a shocker in the kitchen so it may become my dusting apron.

April is Targa Month in Tassie!!

I get to see ALL sorts on this corner!!

It is never boring and forever changing.....

These guys caught my eye one Saturday - it was the weekend

that Ten Days on the Island started.

Anyhow I missed taking a photo when they walked past but

I didn't miss them when they came back!

The outfit (if you look closely at their butts) is called a Morphsuit.

Not much more that you could say about these boys is there??

We live, eat and breath soccer at the moment!

The season is underway, although for us it didn't even stop over summer.

Mackenzie was selected as a Representative Player for the

Northern Tasmania Junior Soccer Association last year and

leaves on Saturday to play in the Centenary Cup in Sydney.

He will be gone for a week and will miss his school camp.

He is the handsome one .....

third from the left in the front row.

Now for those of you who know where my shop is, you will know

that I am on the corner of York and Bathurst Sts.

York is one way..... going to Riverside - you can't turn right.

Everyday, at least 6 times a day, (during my opening hours) I see

cars turn right - how there hasn't been a head on I will never know.

Well Targa is in town and who should turn right up a one way street??

The White's Lamborghini!!

Not only did he do a U-turn.....

He stalled it at the lights......

Didn't hinder his performance in George Town later in the day though.

He is the leader in his category.

Wow! How time fly's when you are involved with soccer!!

It was just the beginning of March a day or so ago..... now it's nearly April!!

My son is in the U12's and my husband took on the Presidents

role of Westside Devils Junior Soccer Club last year.

I swore and declared that I wouldn't help or take

on a position because I have a business to run.....

hahahaha..... famous last words!

Needless to say all we do is soccer stuff, we talk soccer only.....

and I took a couple of days off when we had a long weekend

and guess what??? we pumped up 100's of soccer balls!!!!!

Oh well...... Mackenzie will only play soccer for a few more years!

Now down to business.....

This pair of 1940's plaster bookends are absolutely gorgeous.

They are in very good condition for their age....

with minor cracks and the odd chip.

Wouldn't they look lovely in a girls bedroom or

if you collect plaster figures I bet you don't have a pair of these!

Mary Gregory Enamel handpainted vase....

Depicting a boy in a garden....

These vases have been handpainted in very intricate detail.

They are a milk glass (one has damage to the rim).

Would be lovely on a mantlepiece.

The top of this depression glass comport

has been dipped in a beautiful golden yellow color.

I could imagine this full of fruit or sweets...

Great to dress up a table....

February is a fantastic month in Tassie!

Festivale was another delight of music, good Tasmanian food and great Tasmanian Wines.

Friday nights entertainment was Diesel and I was standing within 2 metres of the man!

This Badge or Brooch is 10cm wide and either silver or silver plated.

It has KOSCIUSKO near the tip of the ski and Angus & Cootes,

Sydney marked on the back.

Possibly from the Kosiusko Chalet in the 1930's......

This pair of plaster Kookaburra's are one of my favourite

pieces at the moment.....

So typically Australian....

These Coca Cola Bags are from the 50's and are in fantastic condition.

Nothing compares to Blue & White on a dresser......

Looks like it could have come from my house!

I have a Blue & White fetish and mix and match

odd dinner plates and they always look great.

This Milking Stool has some age to it.....

would look great in a country kitchen or rustic barn.

I love the look of timber in any type of house and this

Kitchen Dresser would be good in a Kitchen or even useful in the Laundry.

that helped certain ailments.....

although on researching the item I did come across the word

"Quackery"

We hope you all had a nice time with your families over Christmas.

We took the opportunity to visit Hobart for the Boxing Day sales

and then drove to the southern most point

of Tasmania the following day.

It was a lovely 8 degrees at Cockle Creek and there

was snow on the distant Mountain Peaks.

Nothing like the 30 degrees and the humidity

my Queensland family was enduring.

The next day we visited New Norfolk and 6 Antique shops!

Just had to see how the others do it.

Mackenzie delighted in telling me that the Drill Hall Emporium

"is a much better shop than yours" Oh well.... something to aspire to!

Then we drove to Bothwell and visited Ross Baker

at Bothwell Stores (huge collection of golf clubs etc etc)

- a must visit if you are heading that way!

It was nice to get away but great to get back to Launceston.

card collections from Players and Wills.

The cover has seen better days but the pages are intact.

1930's Timber Hobby Horse Head.

This is our English corner.....

British Flag draped over our Mannequin, and lovely

brass and enamel English Flag Photo Frame.

This vintage horse is not very big and has a nice feel to him.

This is our Nautical corner.

The frame to the right looks like wool but it is Silk

made by Silkworms back in the early 1900's.

This is our super groovy Vintage Silver Cross Pram.

It has fantastic Deco styling and does

convert from a pram to stroller in need.

A HUGE Raynham Vase.....

will hold multiple bunches of flowers or umbrellas......

2 x Tureens, 6 x Lge Dinner Plates, 6 Med Dinner Plates,

6 x Bowls and 6 Side Plates.

Dates around 1919 and whilst the Tureens

are in fantastic condition there is some crazing

on the plates and one dinner plate is chipped.

Would look fantastic on display!

Now this is our mystery item of the week......
